History

Swan with neck bandThe Swan Research Program is a private research program in existence since 1969.  It is the nation’s only organization dedicated to the study of the family Cygnus.  Our current research is in three areas: Native swan migration, native swan hybridization, and non-lethal control of feral Mute Swan (Cygnus olor) populations.  Our research swan collection is one of the largest in the world and home to eight swan taxa, including the only known hybrids of the Trumpeter Swan (Cygnus buccinator) and Tundra Swan (Cygnus columbianus).

Header Picture Note:  Shown are a pair of the SRP's Trumpeter Swans with their six-month old young breaking ice to make way to a different area of a lightly frozen pond.  The adult male is in the lead.  He uses the breast area of his body in an intentional heaving motion in concert with neck movements to break the ice to make a path. His mate is directly behind him.
