Intersection of Science and Education

The intersection of science and education lays the groundwork for conservation and so is the cornerstone of our Education Program.  Because curiosity and inquiry promote the capacity to recognize the value of the natural world, we seek to

  • Stimulate curiosity through experience and awareness of the natural world (education);
  • Make serious inquiry into the complexities of the natural world (science).

The cumulative result is conservation--long term productivity of natural resources (also known as "sustainability").  Michael Allaby aptly described this in The Concise Oxford Dictionary of Ecology, as "...producing goods and services for humans without depleting natural ecosystem diversity, and acknowledging the naturally dynamic character of biological systems."   Through conservation we promote the welfare of our own lives and those of future generations.

Program Elements

Our Education Program has three main elements, offering educational opportunities for:

  • Community residents of all ages;
  • K-12 students;
  • University students.
