Community Events

Throughout the year, Environmental Studies at Airlie schedules outdoor events to which the general public is invited, usually for free.  The purpose of these events is to give residents in the local region the opportunity to learn about the extraordinary plant and animal species in their own backyards.   Often, these species are overlooked and many are classified in people's minds as "the ones you only see in books," when actually, they can be observed quite easily in many neighborhoods, if you know where and when to look.  For a schedule of these events, see our Calendar at a Glance link.

These events are seasonally based and designed to share the know-how of naturalists.  They are scheduled when the species can easily be observed and examined.  Led by our staff and guest docents who are experts in their fields, they are full of practical information.  Participants learn about recognizing the places (habitats) where species might be found, and how to spot and identify individuals.   We also give tips on how making even very small changes or additions to your home landscape can attract desired wildlife to live and reproduce..

These events are very popular with those who want to experience and learn more about nature outdoors.  Families are especially encouraged to come. The events are not physically strenuous, but do require walking over uneven or gently sloping terrain at times.

When you attend a Community Event, you will want to dress for the weather and wear footgear appropriate for the event.  And don't forget your camera!
